After a period of rapid development of the sites (an increase in both reared surface area and production), tropical shrimp aquaculture is currently being faced with critical problems due to economical and ecological constraints. In many countries with favourable conditions for shrimp aquaculture such as indonesia or Vietnam, sites are often badly selected and/or over-exploited. This conducts to sorne extent to decreases or collapses in the production due to the difficulty in predicting the maximum production capacity of the sites. Oyster production has historically taken place in intertidal zones, and shellfish farms already occupy large extents of the French intertidal space. The expansion of French shellfish aquaculture within intertidal areas is therefore spatially limited, and moving production to the subtidal offshore environment is considered to be a possible solution to this problem. Finding new sites along the French Atlantic coast was studied here from the perspective of small oyster companies run by young farmers, who are interested in offshore bivalve aquaculture expansion compatible with their investment capacity. La caractérisation environnementale de trois zones de la lagune de Bizerte a été faite dans le but d’identifier le meilleur emplacement pour la culture de l’algue rouge Gracilaria verrucosa. La concentration et la distribution des nutriments (ammonium, phosphate) dans l'eau ainsi que la salinité, la température et l’oxygène dissous ont été étudiées dans trois stations d’échantillonnage à différentes profondeurs (1, 2, 3 et 4 m) durant le printemps 2009 afin de suivre leurs variations. Although wildfire plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity in many ecosystems, fire management to protect human assets is often carried out by different agencies than those tasked for conserving biodiversity. In fact, fire risk reduction and biodiversity conservation are often viewed as competing objectives.
